The question

Can conscience make an objectively wrong act morally right for the person choosing it?

    Distinguishes conscience, culpability, objective moral order, and ignorance.

    States the strongest adverse argument before offering a determination.

    Tests whether the determination overstated an authority, collapsed culpability into object, or relied on a source that has not been inspected.

Answers are cheap. Distinctions are not.

Modern thought produces answers faster than it produces distinctions.

Many theological and philosophical questions are difficult because the terms are unstable, authorities do not all bear the same weight, or two propositions may be true in different respects.

How Aquinian reasons

  1. Distinguish before concluding

    Define the terms. Preserve the adverse reading. Separate what is asserted from what is assumed.

  2. Authorities do not enter flat

    Scripture, Tradition, the Magisterium, the Fathers, Aquinas, theological opinion, philosophy, and empirical evidence do not all support a conclusion in the same way.

  3. What cannot be verified stays marked

    A quotation, attribution, edition, or source does not become reliable merely because it appeared in an answer.

What is a disputation?

The disputation (disputatio) is the heart of the scholastic method, and the form Aquinas used in the Summa Theologiae: a question, the strongest objections, a contrary authority, a determination, and replies to each objection. In Aquinian, Disputation is the form to take when an answer is not serious unless the best objection has first been allowed to stand.
